Prof Joaquim Segalés and Dr Oliver Duran Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) was initially detected in the late 1990s in North America and Europe associated with a post weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in pigs. Furthermore, the term “porcine circovirus diseases” (PCVDs) was proposed to define diseases linked to PCV2 which currently include PCV2 systemic disease, PCV2 reproductive disease, PCV2 subclinical infection and porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS). Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) has been recently described and linked to PCVD-like scenarios, however experimental evidence is yet to be presented to support this association. In this seminar we bring together two world class researchers to present an update on the current knowledge on porcine circoviruses of importance in pig medicine.
