Vaccination of suckling pigs

Priorities in piglet-management:

A frequent observation: after a treatment (injection, etc.) stressed piglets may not suckle for several hours. This has negative consequences for the development of the piglets and may result in milk-congestion in the sow.

Vaccinating pigs in the right way

Vaccinating piglets at the right time and in the right way will greatly influence their development.

  • It is preferable, if appropriate, to vaccinate piglets in the end-suckling phase where risks are lower.
  • Combining treatments when possible
  • Vaccines that are less pig-friendly will affect not only animal welfare but also weight development which may result in achieving lower body weight (up to 1 kg at weaning).
