Fever after piglet-vaccination does not have to happen

Behavioural studies show: Differences in suckling-activity of piglets and/or feed intake after
vaccination can be explained largely by the tolerance or intolerance of piglets to the vaccines applied.

→ Fever causes weakness and a resultant expenditure of metabolic energy that can not be used for growth and/or assist resistance to disease.

‘’During the 3-4 days after vaccination, piglets ingest only 50 % of their normal milk-intake’’

‘’The piglets are lying longer and have less contact with the sow’’

  • Some mineral-oil/paraffin based 2 shot vaccines voke stress twice!
  • Vaccines which cause stress when administered around weaning are significant for piglet welfare. The already reduced feed intake may be further diminished.
