Mastitis – Feed Back Inhibitor of Lactation (FIL)

Figure 1 Image

  • Inflammation of specific udder segments can occur at any stage during the lactation.
  • When milk-release is impaired by mastitis in one or more udder segments, there is the threat that FIL (a protein) will be released: when the concentration of this protein in the udder milk in creases, milk production is suppressed and eventually milk flow will stop.
  • Continuous physiological stimulation of lactation is essential for high level milk production in the sow.
  • Without proper milk supply, piglets suffer malnutrition and important protective substances will bed efficient → chances of infection will increase!

Hourly milk-release: important protection against FIL

  • To maintain a high level of immune protection in the suckling pigs, as well as a high level of milk production in the sow (FIL!), it is necessary to have at least one milking bout every hour. This prevents a build-up of milk in the udder segments. Frequent suckling, as described above, requires healthy and active piglets.
